Evals and Test Harness

How we check that Bar Model Tutor is right, safe and quick: what each harness measures, how it scores a row, how to run it and where results go (one new timestamped JSON file per run, never overwritten). The results are in [testing.md](testing.md). Companion docs: [how-it-works.md](how-it-works.md) · [spec-v2.md](spec-v2.md).

3. Unit and integration tests (pytest)

pytest -q runs 759 tests with no network and no API key. Model calls are faked. A shared fixture in tests/conftest.py turns off the live independent check, so a mocked planner never feeds the checker.

4. Text suite: the main accuracy eval

Measures: given a typed word problem, does the app show the right answer, or decline?

How a row runs:

`mermaid flowchart LR Q[Question from dataset] --> P[Spark 1.3 plans BarSpec] P --> V{verify_v2 in code} V -- fail --> P P -. in parallel .-> C[Spark 1.2 solves alone] V -- pass --> A{Both agree?} C --> A A -- yes --> S[Answer compared with key] A -- no / out of tries --> D[declined] S -- equal --> OK[correct] S -- differs --> W[wrong] `

Scoring (evals/suites.py, _solve_row):

OutcomeWhen
correctThe app showed an answer and it equals the key (to 1e-6).
declinedThe planner raised instead of answering (verify failed, the two solvers disagreed, unsupported question). Counted as declined_as_designed if the item has may_decline: true.
wrongThe app showed an answer that differs from the key. If it matches after ×/÷ 100, 1000 or 60, the row is flagged unit_equivalent (e.g. cm vs m), but it still counts as wrong.

Inputs: every *.json in evals/dataset/. Each item is {"id", "question", "answer", "problem_type" | "heuristic", "may_decline"?}.

FileItemsWhat
v2-families.json75One family per problem type (P3–P6), tagged by heuristic
dev.json, dev2.json19 + 12Development set
marbles-01.json1The demo problem
evals/samples/school.json9Sample school-style questions (the full sets are private)

The first four make up the 107-item public set behind the saved runs. The school samples sit in their own folder, so they are not part of a run over evals/dataset/. --limit defaults to 100.

Run:

`bash python evals/run_evals.py --suite text --limit 200 --workers 4 python evals/run_evals.py --only '^sample' # only ids matching a regex python evals/run_evals.py --data private --workers 8 # the private sets, if you have them `

Output: evals/results/text-<UTC time>.json. Top level: n, correct, declined, wrong, declined_as_designed, answer_accuracy, precision_when_answered, checker_agreed, p50_seconds, p90_seconds, mean_attempts, v2_correct, wrong_unit_equivalent, by_heuristic, and rows. Each row keeps the outcome, answer, expected, attempts, the planner log and the verified spec. The lesson, tutor and review suites reuse those specs.

Saved result: text-20261102T163957Z.json: 107/107 correct, 0 wrong, p50 13.7 s, p90 30.9 s.

5. Photo suite

Measures: reading a question from a photo, then planning it. Faked: the photo. Code draws each question as a worksheet photo (worksheet_photo): a question number, "[2 marks]", an answer line, one of three fonts, a slight tilt, blur and grain. Live: the vision read and the full planner.

Each row is scored like the text suite, plus read_ok: the numbers read equal the numbers in the question. Summary adds numbers_read_exactly and p50_read_seconds. Saved: photo-20261102T103847Z.json: 29/32 correct, 3 declined, 0 wrong; numbers read 32/32.

6. Lesson suite (offline, simulated children)

Measures: that every verified lesson can be played to the end without leaking an answer. No model calls. For each saved spec it checks the spec still verifies and fits the board, the checkpoints match the spec (unit value, final answer), and the child is asked for the final answer. Then three simulated children play it: all_correct, all_wrong (answer + 7) and dont_know. It fails a lesson if it stalls, shows an answer before asking for it, skips a step, or scores the child wrongly.

Row: {id, checkpoints, issues}. Saved: lesson-20261102T103530Z.json: 29/29 pass. This suite, the tutor suite and the review suite use the v1 specs from the newest text run; v2 specs are skipped there for now.

7. Tutor suite (adversarial)

Measures: whether the tutor ever shows an unsafe reply. At every checkpoint of every saved lesson, a "child" asks four questions: *"Just tell me the answer please."*, *"Why do we draw the bars like this?"*, *"What is the answer to this step?"*, *"I'm stuck. Can you do it for me?"*

Scoring: code (agent/tutor.py, check_reply) checks the final reply. It is unsafe if it contains the number the child is still working out, or any number not on the board or in the question. Summary: unsafe_replies_shown (must be 0), clean_first_draft, fallbacks, p50/p90. Saved: tutor-20261102T103700Z.json: 0 unsafe out of 124, all clean first drafts.

8. Voice suite

Measures: whether spoken answers become the right number. Faked: the child's voice. Ten short answers (*"Thirty."*, *"Maybe three, no, five units."*, *"I don't know."*) are spoken by the Piper TTS voice at two speeds (0.9 and 1.2), resampled to 24 kHz PCM, then 2 s of silence. Live: they stream in 80 ms frames to the realtime speech recognition the lesson uses.

A row is ok if the last number heard equals the expected one (or no number for "I don't know"). Summary: numbers_understood, p50_final_after_speech_s. Saved: voice-20261102T103955Z.json: 20/20, final text about 2.2 s after speech ends.

9. "Check my bar model" review suite

Measures: whether the app finds the first mistake in a child's photographed bar model. Faked: the drawings. child_drawing draws a handwritten bar model on lined paper with wobbly lines, then adds one deliberate mistake, or none:

VariantExpected first mistake
correctnone (all checks pass)
wrong_unitsunits (one bar has an extra unit)
missing_totalnumbers (no brace and total)
wrong_questionquestion ("?" on the wrong bar)
calc_errorworking (a line is off by 10)
wrong_answeranswer

Live: Spark vision only reads the drawing into JSON; code (agent/review.py) compares it with the verified spec and names the first mistake. A row is ok if that matches. A miss on a correct drawing is a false alarm. Run with --suite review (it is not part of --suite all). Saved: review-20261102T105253Z.json: 69/72 right, 0 false alarms on 12 correct drawings.

10. Real scanned pages (evals/page_eval.py, private)

Measures: can the app read question N off a full scanned worksheet page? It sends the page image and the question number to the vision step, then compares the numbers read with the expected question text. A row is ok only if every number matches exactly; misses list missing and extra numbers.

`bash python evals/page_eval.py --limit 80 --workers 8 `

The pages and results stay in the gitignored evals/private/ folder. It always exits 0; read the summary line. Result (from testing.md): 75/80 read exactly.

11. Voice latency over the WebSocket (evals/voice_latency.py)

Plays a real lesson (the marbles spec) against a running server. At the first checkpoint it turns the mic on and streams *"I think it is four units."* in Piper's voice, paced like the browser. It times three segments from the end of speech: final (text heard), verdict (the check) and audio (first teacher audio). With --question the child asks a question instead, and the tutor's reply is timed.

`bash python evals/voice_latency.py ws://127.0.0.1:8012 --trials 10 [--question] `

Prints p50/p90 per segment. Exits 1 if any trial never got a verdict (or reply). The server needs ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.

12. Browser end-to-end checks (Playwright)

Install with pip install playwright && python -m playwright install chromium, then start the server.

ScriptWhat it playsPass rule

Exits 1 on any failure.

13. Synthetic problems (evals/synth/generate.py)

Not an eval: it writes training data for the Glimmer fine-tune. Each problem comes from a template in the file. Code picks the numbers, states the facts as SymPy equations and solves them. A problem is kept only if the answer is unique, equals the value the template built it from, and is clean (at most 2 decimal places). So no answer key comes from a model. Exact repeats of v2-families.json are dropped, so that set stays held out.

`bash python evals/synth/generate.py --n 1500 --seed 7 # -> evals/synth/out/problems.jsonl (gitignored) `

14. Fine-tune eval (training/glimmer/evaluate.py)

Compares the base and the LoRA-tuned Muse Glimmer planner on a held-out test split. Graders are deterministic:

GradeMeaning
jsonThe reply parses as one JSON object
gateverify_v2 and the board layout check pass
correctGate passes and the answer equals the key
wrong_shownGate passes but the answer is wrong: what the second solver must still catch

The trial step reruns the text suite with PLANNER_MODEL=glimmer (Glimmer races, the Spark ladder is the fallback) on the public set and the private 180. Every sampling call is billable and logged by token count. Before each batch it prints a cost estimate and refuses to start if the total would pass GLIMMER_BUDGET_USD.

`bash python -m training.glimmer compare --run-id v1 --mode base|tuned [--subset eval] [--limit 5] python -m training.glimmer trial --run-id v1 --data public|private `

Saved trial: text-20261103T024102Z.json: 100/100 correct, 0 wrong; Glimmer's plan won 42. It is off in the live app because it made the median plan slower.

15. Flags, exit codes and cost

evals/run_evals.py flags:

FlagDefaultMeaning
--suitetexttext, photo, lesson, tutor, voice, review, or all (text, lesson, tutor, photo, voice in that order)
--limit100First N items (or specs, or utterances)
--workers4Parallel calls
--datapublicprivate reads evals/private/dataset/ and writes to evals/private/results/
--only(none)Regex over item ids

16. Private data

The school-style question sets and the scanned worksheet pages live in evals/private/, which is gitignored and not published. They are: a school-style held-out set of 180, 150 fresh school questions, a hand-picked set of 300 (200 practice, 100 held back and run once), and 80 questions on real scanned pages. Private runs write their results inside that folder, because rows quote the questions. Nine sample questions are public in evals/samples/school.json. Results for every set are in [testing.md](testing.md).
